About #ConnectHistory

As a social science educator in K-12 and now as an educator dedicated to historical learning in higher education, I have for years encouraged my students to connect the history we are learning in class to the world around them.  Over the years, it has sometimes been a complicated task to have discussions that connect our history.  Though, the connections are never daunting, they sometimes hit a little too close to home or comfort.

I avoid telling my students that history repeats itself because I do not believe that accurately relates the importance of historical learning in our lives.  #ConnectHistory is about making the connections in our history, our human motivations and ourselves that feed the world around us today.

All too often, humanities and social science education are getting shelved in academic schedules for more focus on STEM concentrations.  I believe we are seeing a true breakdown in the fabric of our democracy today because we are not longer focusing on the citizenry.  We are not teaching the "human" in humanities.

So I specialize in history and #ConnectHistory hopes to connect the humanity in all of us, problematic as that may be...past and present.
